Grotesque Realism

I don’t really have words for these paintings.

I can’t explain them.

They come out of the life around me, out of 21st century America.

But as I paint I feel myself slipping into the late medieval world of Rabalais’ Gargantua, a world shaped by agonies of poverty and violence yet transfigured by the grotesque excitements
of carnival.

I’m not sure there’s any real difference between Rabelais’ world and ours.
