one cannot look at this

Viral cell phone videos make everyone an intimate witness when police shoot an unarmed black man on the street.

How can painting matter?

This triptych, One Cannot Look at This, is my response. I believe oil paint on canvas can arrest and hold attention as technology can’t.

The work of the cell phone is instant exposure, but its images escape memory.

A painting can make the viewer feel the painter’s hand and eye touching the world, and in this sense make the viewer, viscerally, an accomplice in what is seen.
