Ravens & Landscapes

Living in the landscape just outside my studio door, for a quarter of a century, has taught me the truth of Nez Perce Chief Joseph’s words: “The earth and myself are of one mind.”

Year after year I draw and paint the same old
fences and fields
and adobe houses,
the returning sunflowers and all-knowing ravens, in
undiminished wonder.

Richard Diebenkorn visited northern New Mexico once from California, and went home saying he couldn’t paint the landscape, it was already painted.

If you stick around though, it teaches you how.
