Refiguring the Figure
I never know how to draw a figure.
I try to draw so fast that it’s done before there’s time to figure it out.
I ask models not to pose, just to be alive and at home in their bodies, and often to move as I draw.
When Matisse was on his deathbed, Giacometti came to make some sketches of him.
Matisse leaned over to look at one and said, “You don’t know how to draw. You’ll never know how
to draw.”
Then after a moment he said, “I don’t know how to draw either.”
